Thrifted Treasures - August 18, 2012

Two big Thank yous to From My Front Porch to Yours and to Southern Hospitality for featuring my new chandy!   Both websites host wonderful thrift share parties and there is some awesome creativity to be found!

So!  I got my party button on and I am ready to party LOL!   I had amazing luck this weekend.  I'm so excited, I'm just going to get right to it :)

Look at this haul of teal glass gorgeousness!  The goblets are by Libby but I have no information about the plates or the two champagne flutes.

I think the flutes are mouth-blown glass and am wondering if the plates are from Pier One?  The Libby goblets were $4.25/set and the flutes and plates were 99 cents each.  They came from two different GWs in our neck of the woods.

PINK! PYREX!

Finally I scored pink Pyrex and in the gooseberry pattern.  The small pink dish and the green and white dishes came from the outlet and at 59c/pound, these were mere pennies :)   The large pink Pyrex came from Class & Trash for $18.

As a rule, I am a glass hound.  But this china is so beautiful, I may convert - LOL!

 Russell Wright by Knowles in the Queen Anne's Lace pattern, 1957-1962.  The dinner plates were 99c each (6); bread plates (6) 89c each; saucers (4) 79c each, and 4 tea cups at 59c each.  They are in great condition and I love the pearly finish with the gold accent!  This set came from the Rt. 3 GW.

Miller Studios vintage chalkware fish, 99c.  I have seen this particular one shown with babies but there were none with mine. I am going to frame her  (a shadow box frame I also got at GW for $4) and put her in my mermaid-themed bathroom :)

I d.i.e.d. when I saw these:

Holt Howard, atomic stars reindeer candle holders.  $1.19 each!  Rt. 3 GW.  They match these cuties I found at the outlet:

I don't have any deets about the sweet little glasses.  There isn't any mark on them but the etched stars called my name (really loud) so into the basket they went.  The vintage platter has this fabulous stamp on the back:

Super vintage coolness.  Both the platter and the glasses came from outlet so they were cheap cheap cheap! I'm linking up!

This Week's Thrifty Finds, a little DIY and Minnie Mouse too!

I am so excited about my glass finds this week I could burst!  But before I get to the thrifting, I wanted to answer the questions about my glass finds from my post last week.  Thank you for the comments and questions - I love being able to talk with you and answer questions, etc.

Yes, the AH Wexford water goblets, Mad Men tumblers, ghost light and terracotta pumpkin came from the outlet.  The set-up in the Richmond outlet is wayyyy better (at least from a glass-junkie's perspective) versus the GW outlet in Fredericksburg ("ours").  Richmond puts their housewares in shallow, heavy duty plastic bins that are lined up (side-by-side) on long tables.   The stacking within the bins is minimal since they are shallow and they do try to group things --plates on plates, cups on cups, etc.  Our GW outlet has their housewares in shopping carts and since the carts are much deeper, there is balancing acts going on in there.  Still, I have pulled some amazing things out of those Jenga-like stacked carts :)

Unfortunately, this week our outlet was kind of a bust.  I did manage to find this green satin glass compote (by Indiana Glass).  Even though I didn't find a lot, I liked this piece because they look great mixed in with my milk glass collection. So, after paying pennies for the compote, it was time to head over to the retail side of GW *and* little did I know...

I was about to score the oldest piece glass I have found to date...

(cue dramatic music:  DUN DUN DUN...)

Look at this beauty:

A Bryce Brothers, Higbee & Company, CIRCA 1890, glass vase, in the hard-to-find pattern called, "opposing pyramids."  Woo-freakin'-hoooo!!!  Look at the bubbles!:

*LoVe*  Isn't it awesome?  It's so heavy; I can see how it's survived 100+ years.   It was $1.99.  Crazy.  Cool.  Find.  For a glass geek anyway :)

This next piece is antique also!

This is a 1907 Indiana Glass compote in a pattern called "Okay" (it's also referred to as "snowflake base").  Here's why:

The pattern is only in the bottom of the bowl - isn't it simple and pretty?  That's why I liked it.  It was also $1.99.

Call me quirky, but this next vintage find is just so funny and cute:

He's a thermal carafe!  See his handle?

Hee hee...That's adorable.  Thermal Penguin carafe by Metrokane (1980), $3.  He housed my coffee from this morning until I could grab a cup.  He did a very admirable job :)   I would like to host a tea party with this dapper little fellow.  He'll serve the tea and I will serve...  -   wait for it    - **** Hostess Sno balls ****  get it?  'cause he's a penguin and lives in snow-covered, cold places...  anyone with me? LOL!  I warned you I was quirky.  ~moving on~

I had to get crafty with my next sweet find.  A 1961 Holt Howard Christmas angel AT GOODWILL!  I just can't get over it.

You see, her little (right) wing was broken.  I try to walk away when something is badly damaged, but the 99 cent price tag --oh and the fact that it was HOLT HOWARD at GOODWILL -- made it easy to decide to give fixing it a try.  Believe it or not, Crayola model magic (white) did the trick!  I formed a wing, let it dry overnight and glued it on.  It worked great except that the color of the clay on the prosthetic wing (*giggle*) didn't blend with the ceramic one.  So...I glittered 'em :)  I used fast dry, clear glue and Doodlebug white sugar glitter.

You can tell the right wing is a little thicker than the other but look at that sweet face!  I love that she holds a match AND a candle!

I found a couple more cute vintage things at GW.  A metal mail/key holder (79 cents) which will get a makeover and go in the study:

and a 1950s pink (plastic) powder dish (99 cents) which is going to sit on my vanity.  I'm going to get a pretty and luxuriously poufy powder puff for it too :)

After GW we headed to Salvo.  Here's what I got there:

Is this a Pyrex pattern?  The dish doesn't have any markings :(  It does look brand new though and the colors are fantastic for my kitchen ($2).

I see these a lot but never in such beautiful condition ($2.50).  They were only slightly tarnished and no pitting or scratches!  They were actually simple to polish compared to some of the silver plate I've brought home.  They were made by Leonard Silver Company.

I have finally succumbed to the starburst decoration phenomenon.  I've seen them everywhere - EVERY WHERE and all. over. Pinterest.  But Salvo had this vintage metal mirror on a stand for $3 which made resistance futile:

I got my DIY on again since one of the rods fell out and 2 were missing.  I heated up the ol' hot glue gun, cut a couple wooden shish kabob skewers to size:

glued them in and now it's ready for some paint:

I first thought I would spray it ORB but now I'm thinking silver...I will have to decide once the shelves are up in the study.

Duncan Miller divided nut dish, "teardrop" line introduced in 1936 and produced until 1955 for $1.  And finally - this awesome jar:

I love the wire and bail on it and the bubbles!  I'm hoping this is antique too but I haven't finished reading about how to date it (this website, Historic Bottle Resource, is really informative).  So those are my treasures this week :)

Just one final little tidbit - kind of a "sneak peek" ;)  I have been working on invitations for a 3 year-old's Minnie Mouse Birthday party and here is what I've made for the invitations:

I used my Cricut and the Mickey & Friends cartridge.  I'll share more deets when I've finished all the invites (they are due next week!).  I'm making a banner and party favors too but have a few more weeks to work on those but the invites have to go out ahead of time.

Another Richmond Thrift Trip!

Thank you bloggy friends for sharing your yard sales experiences!  It helped take the sting out of the whole experience and now I am even more convinced hosting them is not my thing :)  I hope you all had a lovely Mother's Day.  I was planning to have dinner out with Jenna on Sunday but she had to work so we moved plans to Monday night.  Now Dan and I had planned to go thrifting in Richmond on Saturday but he had to go out of town and didn't get home until very late Friday night.  I thought he might not be up for going since he'd traveled all week but he was looking forward to it also so we just went a little later in the morning. We had a ball!  This time, we hit a few antique malls which included thrift stalls.  These places are a blast.  I get to browse the antique stores and see and study the pieces of antique glassware that are out of my price range but shop the thrift places and find the vintage stuff I can afford :)  Of course, we stopped at the GW outlet first so I'll start with that.  It was pretty picked over but there were little treasures waiting just for me.  The housewares are 59 cents/lb.

Aren't these beautiful!?  It reminds me of the trim my Grandma had on her pillowcases.  It was actually my Grandpa who crocheted beautifully (he passed away when I was 7) and it's why I have such an appreciation of crocheted things :)

Melamine bowl with the three bears graphic and American Girl walking terrier pup w/leash.  I can't find any information on the bowl which is a bummer because if it really is the three bears, maybe there's a whole set to include Goldilocks...and if there is, I want it - LOL!  I have no reason for picking the little dog but I just couldn't leave him behind.  It's like he ran off from his owner with his leash dangling like that.  I am hoping to find him a forever home. ;)

If nothing else, my house will have the MOST Christmas decorations on the block. LOL!  I am finding that I love the "old world" Santa a lot.  This one is by Yankee Candle and it's ceramic with flocking and textured paint.  It's pristinely (I made that word up) white and is perfect - no stains, chips, or cracks.  The snowflakes are glittered-coated plastic.  That does it for the outlet finds.  Next we went to the "Family Thrift Shop" and here's what I found next:  Silver crest milk glass compote (or comport as I have come to learn):

I want to put shelves up on either side of the 1900s mantel and display my milk glass.  It's on the "to do" list...we just have to start working the list :)   After the outlet, we decided to head over to the nearby Salvation Army.  Oh boy, am I glad we did!  Lookie at this:

a Burberry cashmere scarf *SWOON*.  I have wanted one of these for years.  I saw one at a designer outlet mall once and I actually got in line for the register to buy it.  But as I stood there, looking down at the $80 price tag, I lost my nerve and didn't go through with it *giggle*.  That one that got away was the "classic" scarf (12" x 68").  *THIS one is a scarf/wrap so it's 28" x 72"!  GET OUT!  I saw it on eBay for $280 BIN *gulp*---and the one I got was $2 - oh yeah, 2 Georgie Washingtons - *SQUEAL*  I am definitely looking forward to scarf season - if I wasn't worried about sweating on it, I'd wear it all through summer - LOL!

So, after the scarf, I figured I peaked for the day.  How could I top that?  Let me show you...

Next, we hit Class and Trash - an antique and thrift store.  It's fast becoming one of my favorite places.  It has all kinds of stuff - architecture salvage, furniture, glassware, etc.  The prices are incredible.  Here's what I couldn't leave without:

Hmmm, on December 25th 1881, Miss C.W. Branman was presented this lovely book of poems by her friend (what amazing  handwriting!) but UH OH!  OH SNAP, Miss Branman S-C-R-R-R-A-tched that name OUT!  Victorian scandal! Oh if this book could talk!  Seriously, my jaw hit the floor when I saw the date - 131 years old - and the price was $10 -- only 7 cents for each year this book has seen.  Mine. mantel.

I have been looking at vintage (silver plate) silverware patterns online for awhile now.  I want a set for special occasions but I hadn't decided on a pattern.  I figured I would leave it to chance.  Class and Trash had a couple jars full of silver plate utensils so I went through it all and I'm happy to show you what I've decided on.  They were sorely tarnished and I polished them.  Once I could see the design and mark, I looked them up.  I paid $1 a piece:

1847 Rogers Bros. silver plate in the Louvain pattern (1918-1940).  I'm pretty sure there was a fourth fork but at the counter, I only had 3.  At the time, I really didn't want to go back through all of it again but I'm wishing I would have.  Oh well, the hunt begins for other pieces, what's one more fork?  Ha!  Since we were in Ashland, we thought we'd go into the town as we had been told there were more antique/thrift stores.  We found Ha'Penny antiques/vintage and popped in.  I'm so glad we did.

I am loving the iridescent glassware from Federal Glass Company and this gorgeous snack set was only $18.  I think it's 1960s.  

That's all for the weekend finds but on Thursday night I popped into Two Times New and spied this treasure - a 1961 Holt Howard Cozy Kitten, salt shaker.  It was $19.   She is in very good condition, has the cork, but the little box inside to make a meow sound no longer works.  OK, confession time.  I couldn't bear her to be without her counterpart, so I spent an additional $13 and bought the pepper shaker from eBay.  It's kind of cheating but I thought it was kismet that someone had only the boy shaker for sale when I only had the girl shaker - so I had to reunite them (yes, I tell myself anything I need to - LOL!)
