YHL's Unofficial Macklemore Thrift Store Challenge

What? What? What?  Yo, Young House Love is hosting the Unofficial Macklemore Thrift Store Challenge and I'm here to tell you that it's like date night, Christmas and a little like walking through a fun house all in one!  The Petersiks, inspired by the hilarious rap song, Thrift Shop, by Macklemore & Ryan,(if you haven't heard the song, you can listen to the (clean) version here):

came up with this excellent and clever idea (not surprised; they are DIY superheroes) to host a thrift challenge!  Here's the sitch - there are three things you gotta do:

1. Take $20, head to the thrift;
2. Spend your $20 however you like and photograph your spoils; and
3. Find one or more of the things Macklemore & Ryan raps about and snap a pic and post it.  And of course, blog about your adventure.

Easy Peasy - Oh I got this.  I can thrift like a bargain biotch.  Challenge accepted.

Dan and I started off like this:  $20 bills in our pockets, fly specs, and a rapper's attitude, CHECK

Local Thrift Store...in the snow!...double check

We headed to the Savers in Woodbridge, set to blow the lid off the place with all the crazy thrifting - hecka yeah.  It's a superstore yo, bring on the cheap quirk.  I couldn't wait to start shopping but one look at the price tags, and I was like:

What? What? What?  Savers' wants HOW MUCH for this secondhand stuff!??  You can tell I'm totally irked cause I'm making the disrespected duck face.  Whoa, the prices were ridiculous!  Case in point - these creepy masks:

Twenty-FIVE dollars... EACH!  I'm sorry the picture is blurry but I was getting swindled and pimped.  $25 spondoolicks for these creepy artiWHACKS that could possibly put a curse on my house?  Definitely NOT.  There were no thrifty deals here.  The thrift superstore was a super disappointment.  I call that getting tricked by a bizness...although...

There was this cute beaded monkey:

FIFTEEN bucks.  Sorry beaded monkey, I'd go bananas for you if you were, say, $2, but $15?  My cart must roll on.

Then, there was this other stuff from the song - a Big A$$ Coat, and it was dookie brown:

It was fun cause it was made out of  Muppet fur.  Wait a tick, has anyone seen Fozzie Bear, lately? No?  Uh oh!

My ace man Dan found some super-cool kicks.  They are not alligator but they sure are green:

But green don't have a thing over these:

Ah, he got the Velcros!

I found where old knee boards go to die:

And then, we found Macklemore's Grandpa's keyboard:

Pops can really stunt and floss with his electric chord organ (yeah, I heard it; it didn't sound right)....Anyhoo, Dan fired it up...

(Lucky for us he was in the "electrical testing area") and he rocked the house phantom of the opera style.  But, for $25 our cart stayed unoccupied.  We decided to try our luck at another thrift.   As we headed for the door, right at the check out, I saw these flashy glasses:

They are really flashing!  The saluting price tag is really hot, too.   Don't hate.  They had 5 settings, "steady" as shown, "sequenced," "chasing,"  "random," and "blinking".  Cool.  I wanted them *but* $5 is too much for a few chucks (and then tossed in the junk drawer).  So, out the door we went and headed over to:

B Thrifty - that's exactly what we were trying to do but Savers fibbed.  But B Thrifty pulled through!  Lo and behold, it was a great thrift store!  I was happy to have gotten my pics at the other place because I was in the zone and hunting!  So many cool things here!  Here's my haul:

And in the spirit of keeping it real, here is where I FAILED the challenge (I prefer to think I overachieved, thank you).  I was supposed to spend $20 and well, my chair alone was $30.  So I was definitely able to spend $20 (twice).  If I hadn't bought the chair I would have been fine but it's just too cool to have left it behind.  Here's a closer look:

Oh so sweet - I love the scroll back and semi-circle frame!  It's in desperate need of a bath; then paint, and then something delicious for the upholstery.  That big green glass globe?  I've got plans for it too.  I'm thinking table lamp!  I have a soft spot for large chunks of glass and this was definitely coming home with me.   I was thrilled to find these two pieces:

Pyrex Delphite.  This baby needs some scrubbing, but once it's cleaned up, I'm using it for a casserole for the next work-sponsored pot luck!  This particular pattern/piece was a promo during winter 1961 - this is peanutbutter&jelly Awesome

My constant readers know I am an all-out glass hound.  I have been after a piece of this glassware --the pattern is called "Chandelier" by the O'Hara Glass Company.  This is the first time I've ever seen a piece in the wild!  It is roastedmarshmallow&chocolate Awesome!  This plate is gorgeous:

It looks like the Katy pattern from Imperial Glass.  Here's a closer look at the silverplate basket:

It will need some polishing.  A silverplate basket seems like a great idea.  Easter is around the corner and we live on Easter drive.  Done and done.  I'm set with my basket and bobble-head bunny:

I had to, it was 99c.  Spring-y ears AND its head bobbles - win/win.

The doll is a vintage Crissy doll with "growing hair."  It works!  Turn the crank on her back and her hair recedes into a hole in her head.  Press her belly button and pull her hair up.  Nifty!  How do I know so much about this doll?  I read a lot (and I may or may not have had one when I was growing up)  She has "1969 Ideal Toy Corp..." plus a patent number stamped on her tush.  Poor girl, she'll regret that when she's older.   Don't let the lazy eye fool you, she's in excellent condition (except for the bit of frizz in her hair).  $1.99 - incred-i-bul.

Next up, a magic, 3 Dimensional world of Mermaids book.  A must have for all mermaids and mermen, alike:

It was 99c.    And last but not least, this truly pretty framed silk embroidery.

It has been professionally framed (with a silk mat!) but it's water-stained (at the top behind the price) and the white silk has mildewed.  I am not sure I can salvage it but it's worth a try.

There you have it.   It was totally fun and finding treasures is like opening Christmas gifts on Christmas morning.  Oh, and how is it like a fun house --well, because it's a little scary too.  Because of things like this:

At least this little...uh, hobbit/troll/gnome?? looks friendly, right?   Hmmm, even white paint wouldn't help this look chic.  Or would it?  See, imagining the possibilities is just part of the fun :)

Are you ready to accept the challenge!?

Thrifted Treasures - Antique Glass & Pyrex!

Hello All!  I hope you had a wonderful weekend and if you were caught up in any of that horrible storm on the east coast Friday night, here's hoping you're safe and sound and the electricity is back on!  We were lucky; our power went off/on several times but ultimately it hung in there and stayed on.  Our cable didn't make it through - which took out our phone and internet - but that's nothing compared to being without power.

Dan and I decided not to go to Richmond and try out a flea market and a few thrifts we heard about in Thornburg.  Of course, if we head south on 95, there's no passing up our GW outlet :)  We started there with these finds:

These cute little cordials were inside a wine box.  I guess that's kinda appropriate, right?  I haven't identified them yet but they look very similar to Webb Corbett crystal.  I love the wafer stem and ribbed bowls.  Next up,

Two iridescent champagne flutes!  I never pass up iridescent glasses when there are more than one and especially when I find them at the outlet.

How is this for random -

A cloisonne praying mantis.  I have never thought about needing a glass and metal praying mantis - or any kind of bug, actually, but I think this is soo cool!  I'm going to touch up his gold legs & antennae but isn't he neat? Glass and metal seemed to be the theme for the finds at the outlet:

A silver plate and two brass candlesticks.  All of them detach at the base (for storing?) and the silver one also unscrews at the top.  I thought it was so you could make it shorter but the top doesn't fit the base.  Anyone know why they come apart like that?

That was it for the outlet and at 59 cents a pound, I didn't even have to break a $10 bill :)  Next, I popped over to the GW retail and found these:

I have been looking for a glass old school juicer and not only did I find a beautiful green one, I found a heavy-duty one too!  They $2 each.

Next, this jardiniere -

A 1978 Indiana Glass crystal diamond point jardiniere (a.k.a. planter) with ruffled edge - $1!  In keeping with my glass obsession, I nabbed this beauty:

12" Anchor Hocking pineapple pattern candle shade & stand - $6.  I love this!  It's absolutely perfect - no chips or anything.  That was all for the GW retail.

We headed out to the "Manor Mart" flea market in Thornburg.  It was pretty hot outside but this flea is partially indoors so we could check out a few tables outside and then head inside to cool down.  I found this dish outside.  It was on an old table, filthy and with rain water:

The shape did me in.  It's really unusual and other than missing the knob (which was a very clean break!) it's in good condition.  I was delighted to find this is a McKee Brothers Keystone pattern lidded compote.  The  date on this piece is 1897-1902!  I only paid $2 for it! LOVE finding antique glass!!

Next, I found this little dish -

It's not marked but look how translucent it is!  It was $1.45.

Sooo, that wrapped up the flea market.  I would be willing to check it out again sometime.  Our last stop for the day was a shop advertised as an antique & thrift store, and auction house.  Cool.  We went in, looked around, found a lot of "antiques" --at least they were priced that way --we even checked out the auction preview room.  And as we were heading out of the preview room and back into the store, I looked over and saw these sitting in a shelf just inside the store:

Yes, I do believe in love at first sight.  Price tags can spoil it though and I held my breath while searching for the price tag.  Of course, the only tag I could find stated, "Lot 202".   That meant they weren't for sale.  But wait a tick, they weren't in the auction room so maybe they were for sale?  I didn't want my love affair with these to get squashed by a silly misunderstanding --you know, like the ones in every Rom Com where there's some slight miscommunication that drags out until the last few minutes of the movie.  Dan tracked down someone to resolve the dilemma.  As it turns out, all items in the store first make their way through the auction house.  If they're not bid on, they are moved out to the store to sell.  The dishes were for sale!  We finally got to the good part.  The price was $45...and...for the perfect ending to my Rom Com...plus 20% OFF = $36 - for 4 dinner plates, 4 tea cups, 4 saucers, and 3 salad plates. SOLD to the lady with the silly grin and starry eyes.   I ran to my beautiful Pyrex turquoise banded dishes and wrapped my arms around them and we'll live happily ever after.

The End.  ;)

Thrifted Finds, June 16, 2012 - Thrifting is Backbreaking Work!

So, I was super-excited about thrifting this weekend because now that the home office is almost complete, I was hoping to find some cool things for it.  I made a quick trip Friday to my retail GW and while browsing, I spied a gorgeous white satin (or frosted) glass lid.  Sadly there was no dish for it to sit atop so I lamented with it in hand for a moment but then placed it back and shelf and continued looking.  There were a few shopping carts sitting nearby that had come out of the back and as I walked by them, I spotted the dish the satin glass lid belonged to - hot dog!  So I reached in to get it and as I was hoisting it up from the depths of the cart, I felt my back spasm very unpleasantly :(  Ugh.  I have been lifting and bending and crouching quite a bit this past week working in the home office so I'm sure my back was grumpy to begin with and a little twist and bend was enough to make it really complain :)  Oh well, it's feeling a little better; once it gets knotted up, I have to keep stretching and coaxing it out of the tangle it's in!  Anyway, here is the culprit behind my discomfort this weekend:

It's 10" tall and it's paneled and it's in perfect condition.  Totally worth the pain - LOL!  I also picked up this acrylic lamp:

I was JUST looking at a lamp like at Lowe's the other night and it was $20 for the base plus the cost of a shade.  This one was $5 and I had a lamp shade that fit it (you'll see it in the office reveal later this week ;) so excited!)

Another cool find for the office -

This was $1.  The cover is beautiful and the illustrated pages are so cool.

On Saturday, Dan and I went to Richmond.  We got a bit later start; it took a little while for me to get going. I'm so glad we went!

This set is absolutely GORGEOUS.  It's a vintage tea/Saki set by Asahi Japan.  The image is what caught my eye:

I just have to say, 59 cents a pound - this weighed maybe 1.5 pounds - less than $1 for this - SHUT. UP.  Zero cracks, chips, or stains.

And what is a thrift trip without a haul of vintage glass?

Isn't she a beauty?  Hazel Atlas Florentine No. 1 ruffled rim sugar cup produced between 1932-1934.  Perfect.  And because of that fantastic ruffled rim, there is no lid so no missing pieces!  This next dish was a really exciting find also:

1941-1956 Fire-King Sapphire Blue 1.5 qt. casserole dish with knob-handled lid.  "Fire King" is printed in the glass:

Unfortunately, the underside rim of the lid is chipped but should still function all right.  It seems the chipping came from the previous owner and nothing that happened in the bin :)

Has anyone seen these before:

There were 5 of these but #5 was chipped so I just took these four.  We're not whiskey drinkers but these were so darn cool...

I picked up a couple of votive holders:

Mercury glass is always a do and the color of the second one had me at hello.  The fishies did me in - ha!

I have seen that a lot of you find those wonderful "Little Golden Books" and remembered to check the book bins:

Honestly, I didn't have any of these when I was a kid but maybe that's even more of a reason to have them.

After looking through the books, it was time to go and just as we were making our way to check-out, the bell sounded and a load of housewares came out of the back.  We figured we'd take a look.  We waited until the feeding frenzy was over -- it's crazier than a mosh pit at a heavy metal concert -- but good things come to those who wait ;)

Hobnail milk glass is always a win :)  I also got this:

It's been washed and sun-dried and smells oh-so-fabulous. The ric rac trim is the perfect touch!  The SALVO was next and it was a jackpot:

EEEEEE!  No marks and one of the most unique pieces I've found to date!  $3.50 S-O-L-D.  It looks like it's covered in nonpareils!  And then a shelf or two below, this:

I haven't identified it yet.  I am thrilled to have a milk glass basket for $3.  Then I spied these odd scissors:

They were tarnished but still so beautiful!  I have learned they are grape sheers and either silver or silver plate.  I paid $1 for them.

The final stop of the day was at our GW retail.  This Leonard Silver footed platter was wickedly tarnished and took lots of elbow grease and Weiman silver cream...

to make it look this beautiful!  Look at those feet:

These two vases ($1 each) were calling my name.  The aqua color is the same as the paint in my sun room:

Neither vase is marked but I cannot resist anything this shade of aqua ;)  which is why I had to grab this:

It's my first butterprint find and in aqua and for $1 :)

and finally, this really interesting painting.  It was between two pieces of glass and sealed with some kind of tape.  I didn't understand why it was done that way so I took it apart and discovered the painting is actually on glass!  The tape was waterproof - D'OH!  So now, I am on the hunt for some so I can do the same.

If anyone recognizes this artist, would you please let me know?  I'm linking up!
